Personal Development Planning

A structured framework helping members reflect on their goals, assess their skills, and plan how to achieve their career objectives.

PDP

This process helps members reflect on their goals, professional and career objectives, and develop plans to support their development and achievement.

A Personal Development Plan is a structured and systematic approach to personal and professional growth. It is a strategic roadmap that individuals create to identify their career goals, assess their current skills and competencies, and outline actionable steps to acquire new skills and achieve their desired outcomes.

The process can strengthen the capacity of learners to reflect upon their own learning and achievement, and to plan for their own personal, educational and career development. This is a core learning process, required throughout the education system and in many employment and continuing professional development contexts. It supports the idea that learning is a lifelong and life-wide activity.

What the framework helps you do

  • Become aware of the skills you have
  • Develop a source of information for CVs, job applications, interviews and appraisals at work
  • Identify and develop the skills you need
  • Work out what you want to achieve and how to achieve it
  • Demonstrate your readiness for promotion or for development opportunities
  • Focus on potential study, career and personal development options and goals

How it helps members

  • Become more effective at monitoring and reviewing progress in their professional careers
  • Consider how they learn, and become more effective learners
  • Recognize and articulate their strengths and weaknesses
  • Identify opportunities outside the curriculum
  • Enhance their employability through greater self-awareness, self-direction and an ability to articulate their learning to employers
  • Think about how their professional, personal and career development relate to each other
