Distinguished Fellow
The highest grade of membership, conferred on individuals of exceptional eminence whose careers have shown enduring scientific excellence, institutional leadership and profound societal impact. No more than five are inducted each year.
The title of Distinguished Fellow is the highest echelon of membership within the association. It is conferred on individuals of exceptional eminence and global recognition whose careers have demonstrated enduring scientific excellence, institutional leadership and profound societal impact.
The distinction is reserved for those who have redefined their field, influenced science policy, or advanced African science in landmark ways.
Eligibility
- Over eight years of uninterrupted membership of the association
- A body of published research of transformative and enduring impact
- Evidence of leadership and service to IARSA
- Nomination by at least three Fellows, with two independent references
How to apply
- Nomination by at least three Fellows, or by one Fellow together with an institutional head, supported by two independent letters of reference from global experts or organisations.
- Submission of the Distinguished Fellowship nomination dossier: a 1,000-word impact statement, a detailed curriculum vitae and supporting documentation — awards, citations, press features, policy papers and patents.
- A list of fifteen publications, highlighting up to ten with a statement of impact.
- Review by a Special Honors Subcommittee of the Fellowship Committee, which assesses global stature, relevance to IARSA and depth of impact.
- Successful candidates receive an official invitation to join the Distinguished Fellowship programme.
Terms & fees
- Nominations may be made by peers or colleagues, or self-submitted.
- Candidates may include evidence of academic legacy — active IARSA members among their mentees, and the sustained impact of that legacy.
