The degree framework
How a degree programme is structured
Academic programmes of study lead to a bachelor's, master's, Ph.D. or professional degree, and consist of degrees, majors, minors, certificates, concentrations and specializations. These are combinations of courses and related activities organized for the achievement of specific learning outcomes, as defined by the national and international partner universities and colleges.
All degree programmes require that a minimum number of semester credit hours be earned, as referenced in the official bulletins of the partner universities and colleges which are produced each academic year.
Degrees and programmes
- Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)
- Master of Arts (M.A.) and Master of Science (M.Sc.)
- Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
- Doctorate programmes (DOM, DBA, Ed.D.)
Major
The main specialization of a student, a comprehensive course of study in a given discipline at undergraduate level. A minimum of 30 to 35 semester credit hours must be earned in the major.
Minor
A secondary specialization, a course of study in a discipline or interdisciplinary group at undergraduate level other than the student's major area of study. A minimum of 15 to 18 semester credit hours must be earned in the minor.
Dual degree
A formal agreement where two degrees are conferred simultaneously from two institutions, or from two colleges or schools within a university. Some courses and credits taken at both apply to both degrees, and two diplomas are produced, one for each degree.
Joint degree
A formal agreement where one degree is conferred from two institutions. Some courses and credits taken at both apply to the degree, and both institutions are listed on a single diploma.
Faculty, advising and admissions
The association's faculty members are highly educated, experienced and professionally skilled in their fields. They have achieved recognition in multiple areas of research and professional service, and many have addressed major conferences in areas related to their specialties. Of equal importance, faculty members pride themselves on the personal attention each student receives; their primary focus is on classroom teaching, group study and research combined with community service.
Each academic programme has a specific administrator available to counsel students on any aspect of the programme. These administrators provide advice regarding course work, waivers and transfers, in addition to general programme planning and information.
The association is firmly committed to responding to the needs of all of its students, from whatever racial and ethnic background, so that they may reach their highest potential. Faculty and staff are always available to provide academic, career and financial-aid counselling services.
It is the association's policy that the admissions, employment and promotion processes for all positions and programmes are free of any discriminatory practices.
